MSc in Medical Laboratories
Course description
Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MSc. MLS) program at the College of Health & Medical Technology Sulaimani Polytechnic University offers the opportunity for Medical Laboratory graduates to elevate their level of clinical practice, advance their career, and become leaders in the Medical Laboratory profession as Medical Laboratory Scientists.
This MSc program was carried out according to the Bologna Process using the European credit accumulation system (ECTS).
Study Plan
First-semester courses are composed of four modules for all the students and one elective module.
Similarly, the second-semester courses include four modules for all the students and one elective module.

The program in the first year is integrated to provide all the medical laboratory science elements that a medical laboratory scientist practitioner requires as follows:
- Biostatistics
- Economic production
- Research Methodology
- Molecular Parasitology
- Human physiology
- Pharmacology
- Bioinformatics
- Hematology
- Advanced Virology
- Advanced Biochemistry
- Advanced Bacteriology and Mycology
- Advanced Clinical Immunology
- Advanced Molecular Biology
- Advanced Histopathology
- Advanced Parasitology
- Clinical biochemistry and laboratory management.
Biostatistics and research methodology courses will allow the students to design the research protocols for testing their hypothesis through an investigatory and analytical approach. The didactic courses of all training elements will be concentrated in the first year of the program to optimize the use of faculty time and help the students lay strong theoretical foundations of medical laboratory science.
Third and Fourth semesters
The program’s second year will be devoted to research work in any subspecialty. This includes writing a proposal, conducting laboratories and/or clinical works related to the proposal, and writing the thesis. Students will carry out the work independently under the guidance and supervision of a dedicated supervisor. Later, the thesis will be evaluated by an examining committee as VIVA.
Duration: The MSc. program is delivered over 2 years (120 ECTSs).
Teaching: You will learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical classes.
Assessment: You will be assessed through written assignments, exams, practical laboratory work and objective structured practical examinations (OSPEs).
Publication: All students have to publish a paper from their thesis before the VIVA.
Entry Requirements: Graduates from the biology and medical laboratories departments with minimum Bachler’s degree of 60 can apply for this course.
English Language Requirement: IELTS (5), TOEFL IBT (59) and PTE (52).
Your Career : The program prepares the medical laboratories graduates for their future PhD studies, teaching assistantships in the lab, research assistantships in universities, research centers, and biomedical corporations.
