The Importance of Water for Life and Climate
On December 2, 2024, a lecturer from Sulaimani Polytechnic University delivered an engaging seminar at Camo Primary School titled(The Importance of Water for Life and Climate). The session aimed to raise awareness among students and teachers about water’s critical role in sustaining life, maintaining environmental balance, and influencing climate systems.
Key points covered:
- What is water and why it matters: The lecturer explained how water supports human health, plant growth, animal habitats, and ecosystems, highlighting the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection) in simple, age-appropriate terms.
- Water and climate connection: The seminar described how oceans, rivers, and wetlands regulate temperature, store heat, and influence weather patterns. Examples included how changes in water availability can lead to droughts, floods, and shifts in local climate conditions.
- Local context: The talk connected global concepts to the region, discussing responsible use of water in households and schools, seasonal rainfall patterns, and the importance of protecting local water sources from pollution.
- Conservation habits: Practical tips were shared with students, such as turning off taps while brushing teeth, fixing leaks, using water-efficient practices in school gardens, and avoiding littering to keep waterways clean.
- Interactive learning: Students participated in Q&A and simple demonstrations illustrating filtration, the stages of the water cycle, and how plants depend on water. Teachers received suggestions for classroom activities and projects to continue the learning.
Outcomes:
- Increased awareness among students about the value of water and their role in conserving it.
- Strengthened collaboration between schools and higher education institutions to promote environmental education.
- Commitment from the school to integrate water conservation themes into science lessons and extracurricular activities.
Acknowledgments:
Camo Primary School administration and staff expressed appreciation to Sulaimani Polytechnic University for supporting community education and inspiring young learners to become responsible stewards of the environment.
