Message from Sulaimani Polytechnic University on the Anniversary of the Chemical Attack on Halabja

On the anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja, we respectfully honor the memory of all the martyrs who, at the hands of the Ba’ath regime, tragically lost their lives on March 16, 1988, when 5,000 innocent civilians were killed with chemical weapons and thousands more were injured, displaced, and left without shelter.

The horrific crime committed by the Ba’ath regime not only claimed the lives of many but also devastated the land, water, environment, and the entire region.

Even after 37 years, the scars of this crime remain evident across the city.

On this solemn occasion, we extend our deepest respect and condolences to all the victims of the tragedy on March 16. As Sulaimani Polytechnic University, we are dedicated to serving higher education in this city through our Technical College of Halabja and the Technical Institute of Halabja, in an effort to alleviate some of the burdens carried by the resilient people of this living city.
