Sulaimani Polytechnic University introduces postgraduate studies in oil and energy engineering

Sulaimani Polytechnic University announced the establishment of a graduate program in the field of oil and energy in cooperation with Kurdistan Foundation for Research and Studies to create a solid, scientific and academic base that contributes to the preparation of qualified workers to work in this vital field and securing the growing need for the labor market and international companies operating in the Kurdistan Region.

The vice president of scientific affairs Dr. Soran Saeed said that the university decided to develop a postgraduate program to award a master’s degree in the Department of Petroleum and Energy Engineering at the Technical College of Engineering (TCE), in coordination with Kurdistan Association for Research and Studies, pointing out that this comes as a contribution to keep pace with the development of oil and gas industries and renewable energy in the region Especially in the province of Sulaimani.

In addition, Assistant Dean of TCE, Dr.Jasm Abdulkareem Al Jaf Said that the Kurdistan Region is rich in oil, gas and renewable energy resources and this requires a strong efforts to prepare more specialized and well-qualified staff to work in these areas which is important for the development of the region and the investment of natural resources, he added , the graduate program will grant a master’s degree in oil and energy engineering as a new and pioneering step to enhance their  scientific career and ensure their  experiences and build a better relationship with the concerned parties in this field, including international companies operating in the Kurdistan Region,10 seats will be allocated for this program ,two of them will be granted through general competitive acceptance, the remaining eight through the parallel study system.

Head of the Department of Petroleum and Energy Engineering at the TCE Dr. Nabil Adel Talabani, said that the program accepts the graduates of the departments of oil engineering, chemical engineering and mechanics, after passing the requirements of competition graduate admission programs by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Kurdistan, noting that the graduates of the departments of chemical engineering and mechanics will require a qualifying course for four Months in the fields of oil and energy, to meet the requirements of granting them a master’s degree in this specialization.

He added , researches of the program include oil engineering fields such as drilling, production, geology of oil and reservoirs, renewable energy, solar and wind, as well as biogas research, biodiesel, electrical chemistry and control engineering, systems and processes in oil industries.

Dr. Nabil said that the system approved in the section complies with the standards of the European Bolona system, which requires passing of 120 European units distributed on the courses and researches of the program , which leads accordingly to supports the competitiveness of graduates to qualify for Job opportunities within the Kurdistan Region and the international companies that work in  the Kurdistan Region and outside.

It is noteworthy that Sulaimani Polytechnic University has developed the Department of Petroleum and Energy Engineering at the Technical College of Engineering in 2016, and that the section currently includes about 70 students in the morning and evening studies.
