Two Collaborative International Workshops of SPU and Nahrein Network Took Place
On November 30th, 2020, the third international training workshop entitled “Introduction to Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning” was held. Over 89 participants from 22 different universities and government and non-government associations and organizations from a total of 3 countries (Iraq, United Kingdom, and Yemen) attended the workshop. Soon after, on December 1st, 2020, the fourth international training workshop entitled “Fort Conger, Laser Scanning to the Rescue” was held. Over 79 participants from 20 different universities and government and non-government associations and organizations from a total of 3 countries (Iraq, United Kingdom, and Yemen) attended the workshop.
Both workshops were presented by Professor Dr. Richard Levy, who is an Emeritus Professor of Planning at the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape at the University of Calgary, Canada.
During the two workshops, Prof. Dr. Richard Levy introduced the foundations of photogrammetry and laser scanning, which is a piece of technical equipment used to recreate 3D models. He discussed history, types the different uses of photogrammetry and laser scanning in preserving cultural heritage and historical places in the digital cultural heritage sector, and explaining other uses in different fields and expertise, by introducing various examples.
The Nahrein Network is a collaborative international project between University College London (UCL), University of Oxford, Sulaimani Polytechnic University, and the University of Al-Qadisiyah. The Network is supported by an AHRC Global Challenges Research Fund grant from the UK government.
