Sulaimani Polytechnic University Achieves a Remarkable Milestone in the 2026 SCImago Institutions Rankings Across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region
In the latest edition of the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), Sulaimani Polytechnic University (SPU) has secured a distinguished position, reflecting the university’s academic excellence and scientific standing at both national and international levels.
According to the 2026 SCImago report, SPU has achieved premier rankings within the Kurdistan Region, emerging as the top-ranked public university and securing second place overall among all public and private higher education institutions in the region. At the national level, SPU ranks 12th out of 76 Iraqi universities included in the report. This notable achievement underscores the university’s rapid advancement in scientific research, innovation, and academic impact across Iraq.
The overall institutional ranking is determined based on a composite of three key performance indicators:
1. Research Performance (50%)
2. Innovation Output (30%)
3. Societal Impact (20%)
SPU’s strong performance across these metrics demonstrates its steadfast commitment to rigorous scientific research, technological development, and meaningful societal engagement.
Beyond the overall institutional ranking, the SCImago report also highlights performance across specific academic disciplines. Sulaimani Polytechnic University achieved significant positions in several subject areas nationwide, further demonstrating its expanding research capacity:

2. Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology: Ranked 9th
3. Engineering: Ranked 12th
4. Agricultural and Biological Sciences: Ranked 30th
