Comprehensive Support for Hearing-Impaired Students at Sulaimani Polytechnic University
At Sulaimani Polytechnic University, within the Computer Science Institute – Database Department, six students with hearing disabilities are receiving comprehensive support to ensure full inclusion and equal access to higher education.
To promote an accessible and empowering learning environment, the department has implemented several key initiatives:
- Special Lecturers:
The university provides specialized lecturers who are trained in teaching methods that accommodate hearing-impaired students. These lecturers use sign language, visual presentations, written explanations, and demonstration-based learning approaches. Their teaching strategies focus on enhancing visual understanding and interactive engagement, ensuring that students can follow lessons effectively. - Specialized Laboratory:
A dedicated laboratory has been established to meet the specific learning needs of the students. This lab is equipped with advanced visual tools, captioned video materials, visual alert systems, and collaborative learning platforms. The lab’s design allows for smaller group learning and personalized academic support to foster a more inclusive and effective learning experience. - Speech-to-Text Technology:
The department utilizes real-time speech-to-text tools during lectures and discussions. This technology transcribes spoken language into written text instantly, enabling students with hearing disabilities to follow classroom interactions and participate more fully. It is particularly valuable in live lectures, workshops, and group projects. - Full Scholarship Support:
All six hearing-impaired students are provided with full scholarships, covering their tuition fees and related academic expenses. This financial support ensures that students can focus entirely on their studies without facing economic barriers, reflecting the university’s strong commitment to educational equity and inclusion.
