In a remarkable display of compassion and commitment, on 4th April 2023, a group of students from Technical College of Health and Medicine at Sulaimani Polytechnic University has teamed up with a local thalassemia research laboratory to contribute both time and resources to furthering research into this life-threatening genetic blood disorder.
Thalassemia, a condition in which the body produces an abnormal form of hemoglobin, affects millions of individuals worldwide. Despite advances in treatment, there is still no permanent cure for the disease, making ongoing research critical for improving the lives of those affected.
The initiative, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Solaf, head of Medical Laboratory department, was born out of a shared desire to raise awareness about thalassemia and support efforts in scientific research. “We wanted to help make a real difference in the lives of people living with thalassemia,” Dr. Solaf said. “By supporting the laboratory, we’re hoping to contribute to the development of better diagnostic tools and, eventually, a potential cure.” Further, this initiative does provide a crucial insight for our student to gain as much as possible laboratory skills needed for their future career.
