A Brief about the department:

Horticulture and Landscape Design department are consisting of two main sciences. The first science is Horticulture, which is the science and art that includes the study of plant growth and plant interactions with the environment (soil, air, water). Second is Landscape Design, which is the art and process of designing and creating plans to shape the outdoor spaces in both rural and urban environments, to improve human wellbeing and maintain a sustainable environment. This combination of the professions led the department to focus on a very broad scale such as planning and design public parks and narrow down to designing a garden, indoor garden.

Historical summary about the department:

This department is a new department. It was established in Bakrajo Technical Instituted (BTI) in the 2018-2109 academic year. In the same year, it opened its door to many new students. This program of study is based on the Bologna process which is a European credit transfer system (ECTS) and in this process, the student must earn 120 credits during two years of study in order to fulfill the requirement of the diploma program. Each subject has a certain credit and each credit equal to 25 study hours. Before the beginning of each semester, students will be provided with the guiding course which is prepared by Sulimani Polytechnic University professionals and this course is designed to help students get to know each other, the institute, the departments, and the number of credits that they have to earn.

Aims of the department:

1- Understand the various areas of horticulture.

2- To establish a link between Teaching /Research institutions, and government.

3- Obtaining theoretical knowledge about the basic fundamentals concerning Horticulture & Landscape.

4- Acquiring knowledge of science that can be applied in practice.

5- Designing and installing it on various sites and scales.

6- Learning how to solve Landscape problem from the first step of determining the programs to the site analysis, then the formation of concept and gradually evolving the design to reach finally the overall design.

7- Having better knowledge about details in Horticulture & Landscape Design concerning hard landscape and soft landscape.

8- Understanding the Landscape as a building environment that interacts with aesthetical, social, ecological, and cultural aspects.

Importance of the department in the market:

The importance of the Department is to prepare students, professionals in the field of planning, designing, installing, and managing parks, gardens, public and specific outdoors, by discovering new knowledge and providing innovative educational programs relating to horticulture and landscape design.

Importance of the department in society:

In addition to transferring this knowledge to service societies in terms of environment, health, and wellbeing.

Types of works can be implemented by the graduates of this department:

1- Students will be able to use some computer programs such as AutoCAD, Sketch-Up, and Photoshop.

2- Students will be able to design a landscape project.

3- Students will be able to plant landscape plants.

4- Students will demonstrate employability skills in the landscape field.

5- Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the fundamental design methodologies in landscape design at appropriate scales.

6- Develop creative design proposals by demonstrating an essential understanding of topography, hydrology, plant material، land use, and context.

7- Students could be able to supervise and monitor the projects in both areas (horticulture and landscape)

Which title can be given to the graduates of this department?

After passing the final exam in all semesters, students will gain a certificate in horticulture and landscape design field, which can work in the public landscape, garden, orchard, greenhouse, and nursery and work as graphic designer …..etc.

What are the pre-requisites of the students enable success in this department:

Students must be graduated from 12 stages of high school (scientific branch), and it is better to have good information in computer programs, hand drawing, English language, and Mathematic science.
