Sulaimani Technical Agriculture Institute was established in 2007 by the Technical Foundation Board following the Higher education Ministerial order (No.304) in 28/08/2007. Later, its name was changed to Bakrajo Technical Agriculture Institute. The Institute currently consists of five departments aiming at preparing many graduates to work in the field of agriculture and to make development in planation, food products and increasing Local food products in the markets. Additionally, it seeks to introduce new technologies and systems in agriculture and plantation activities.
The institute, thanks to its staff, the Ministry of Higher Education, and the Polytechnic University of Sulaimani, has made great achievement and success since its establishment. At this moment, the Institute owns 12 acres of agricultural land utilized for providing practical instruction to students and for conducting research studies by students and instructors. Further to that. A number of agricultural equipment and Laboratories are being allocated to the institute aiming at providing students with the opportunity to learn practically.
The main objective of the institute is to develop agriculture and planation in the Kurdistan region through preparing many skilful agriculture experts to work in the agriculture sectors, additionally to modernise agriculture and food industry.

BTAI consists of 5 departments:

1) Plant Protection, 1999-2000
2) Industrial Crops, 2005-2006
3) Protected Agriculture, 2005-2006
4) Ornamental Plants, 2008-2009
5) Agriculture Extension, 2009-2010
